A DARWIN man has died overnight after an underground mining accident involving a truck.

Alice Springs police confirmed that a Granites Gold Mine worker died of a heart attack after a truck had earlier run into him.

"It was an underground incident where a truck reversed into a male worker," a police spokesperson said.

"The worker was conveyed to the mine clinic but he later died."

Police in Yuendumu, about 300 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, received a call at 1am to report that a man had died at the gold mine, west of the Yuendumu.

Officers from Yuendumu said they have travelled to the mine to investigate the death, which has also being reported to NT Worksafe.

It is believed that arrangements are being made to fly the man’s body back to Darwin.
