UGL delivers locomotives to QR
the new stock will improve reliability and availabilityUNITED Group (UGL) has landed a $78m order for 12 new locomotives for national transport and logistics firm QR Intermodal.
UGL will deliver 12 diesel electric locomotives from its Broadmeadow plant in NSW to QR (formerly Queensland Rail) between July and December 2009.
UGL managing director, Richard Leupen, says the need for cleaner and more efficient technology has fuelled ongoing demand for locomotives and spare parts.
Experts predict the freight market will double between 2000 and 2020 as Australia’s freight industry moves from road to rail.
QR executive general manager, Ken Lewsey, says the new rolling stock will improve reliability and availability, increase haulage capacity, reduce fuel and maintenance costs and cut carbon emissions with lower fuel consumption.
According to Lewsey, QR plans to purchase new wagons to add to the new locomotives in the future.
