AUTOMATED technology is set to transform the mining industry and deliver significant cost savings, according to industry professionals.
Rio Tinto is set to implement high-tech robotic trucks in a trial project in Western Australia’s Pilbara.
The company’s head of innovation, John McGagh, high-level robotics have reported great efficiencies and maintenance savings of up to %40 in other industries.
Vehicles will be fitted with computers, lasers and advanced GPS systems to cut costs and make way for expansions.
Automated drills will create holes, while another machine will insert explosives. Robotic loaders and trucks will then cart material to be transported by driverless trains to ports on the coast.
Rio says automated mine vehicles and technology will enable expansion of its projects without additional labour.
