RIO TINTO is launching high-tech robotic trucks to fully automate a trial iron ore project in the Pilbara.
The vehicles will be fitted with computers, lasers and advanced GPS systems to cut costs and make way for expansions.
The technology will be introduced to Rio’s West Angelas mine, and later implemented at the rest of its iron ore, coal and copper mines in the Pilbara.
It is hoped the plan will help boost the company’s production by 50% before 2013, despite significant labour shortages in the region.
Rio has been working on automated technologies for several years, with first commissioning to start in November 2008.
