Prevent operators falling from mining vehicles, WorkSafe

Prevent operators falling from mining vehicles, WorkSafe WORKSAFE Victoria says that there are an increasing number of incidence wherein drivers are falling from dump trucks whose doors open onto unguarded access platforms.

The safety authority says that the drivers can fall two metres or more. The risk of serious harm is greater when the door opens too far and exposes the driver to the risk of a fall.

WorkSafe says that in order to improve safety and prevent this companies should either fit a physical ‘stop’ to prevent the cabin door opening fully and extending the guardrail so it meets the edge of the open door, or extend the sides of the work deck so that guardrails can be installed to enclose the platform without affecting the operation of the door.
