Miner awaits rivals decision on wether or not to share rail line

BC Iron says it will be forced to use trucks to transport its iron ore if Fortescue Metals Group does not allow it to use its rail line.

The miner says using trucks to move million tonnes of iron ore to Australia's western coast is a costly alternative to train. It typically costs about 10 cents to haul a tonne of ore each kilometre, twice the cost of using rail.

BC Iron says it must find a way to move its iron ore the 300km to the coast before it can start mining.

A Fortescue spokesman said negotiations remained active over sharing its rail line, but could not provide a date when they might conclude.
