Giant rail grinder imported to service coal mining tracks

Giant rail grinder imported to service coal mining tracksA GIANT rail grinder has been imported to Mackay from the United States to service the train tracks used by mining companies to transport coal.

The 740 tonnes and 180-metres long grinder is expected to save Queensland Rail up to $200 million each year on line and wheel maintenance.

The $28m machine will crawl along the rail lines throughout Queensland at 15kp/h and remove defects from tracks.

The vehicle is expected to have a life cycle of about 15 years and spend more than three-quarters of its time grinding the rails that services the coal fields.
