A GIANT rail grinder has been imported to Mackay from the United States to service the train tracks used by mining companies to transport coal.
The 740 tonnes and 180-metres long grinder is expected to save Queensland Rail up to $200 million each year on line and wheel maintenance.
The $28m machine will crawl along the rail lines throughout Queensland at 15kp/h and remove defects from tracks.
The vehicle is expected to have a life cycle of about 15 years and spend more than three-quarters of its time grinding the rails that services the coal fields.
