Eyes wide open: Fatigue management laws come into action

NEW management laws to reform heavy vehicle management and fight driver fatigue will come into effect from 29 September 2008.
Fatigue has long been an issue on mine sites, leading to a range of vehicle and workplace accidents.
The new, nationally consistent laws will apply in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.
The laws aim to combat driver fatigue and change the focus from regulating hours to managing fatigue.
The reforms involve drivers deciding the range of work and rest options they should comply to. They will apply to heavy vehicles with a GVM of 12t or above.
Penalties under the new laws will be applied according to the level of risk, and range from fines to court imposed penalties.
