Disgruntled employees torch mining vehicles in West Africa
Simandou is the world’s largest known undeveloped iron ore depositUNEMPLOYED youths demanding jobs have torched vehicles belonging to Rio Tinto in West Africa.
Three vehicles were destroyed as people protested over employment issues at the mining company’s Simandou project in Africa.
Rio is fighting to control the $6bn project after government officials challenged the validity of a mining permit granted by the West African state.
Operations at the site have not yet started.
Simandou is the world’s largest known undeveloped iron ore deposit, and the company hopes to mine its first deposits in 2013, with full production expected by 2018.
