THE CSIRO says its latest edition of CSIRO Exploration & Mining’s earthmatters magazine looks at how Australian science and engineering is advancing the frontiers of intelligent automation in the resources industry.
The magazine examines some of the latest and most intelligent technology being used by major miners as well as that which is still in the development stage.Exploration and Mining Chief Dr Mike McWilliams says what was once thought impossible or very difficult has been proven in the lab and is now actively being commercialised.
McWilliams claims we have built intelligent machines and systems that are operated remotely at distances ranging from a few metres to more than a thousand kilometres. He says we are creating an immersive and interactive virtual environment that will be a research theatre and training centre for robotic mining equipment.
The organisation claims this ambitious drive for automation is aimed at solving two fundamental problems that have dogged the exploration and mining industry for years. For example, how to remove people from hazardous and inhospitable working environments and how to increase efficiency, productivity and profitability in mining.
