BHP commissions second Hitachi excavator at Mt Keith
The new machine will bring the number of vehicles operating across the globe to sixBHP Billiton has commissioned another Hitachi EX8000-6 hydraulic excavator at its Mt Keith nickel/ore mine in central-east WA.
The 800t vehicle will join one other EX8000-6 at the site, which was the first to be commissioned in Australia. The new machine at Mt Keith will bring the number of vehicles operating across the globe to six.
The excavator, based on the EX3600 platform, is Hitachi’s largest mining machine. It features two Cummins QSK60C engines which generate a total of 2900kW of power.
According to the manufacturer, the modified vehicle features a new operator’s seat for enhanced comfort and productivity, and has electric joystick controls for minimal operator fatigue.
The two machines will replace BHP’s existing range of 240t rear dump trucks.

  • Amazing pieces of machinery. I have seen these from about 100m away parked at Mt Keith. I am a HV elect, so would be very interesting to see the technology they use.
