KIMBERLEY Metals plans to develop a lead and silver mine near Kununurra in Western Australia have accelerated the local shire's plan to build a half-kilometre bridge over the Ord River.

Pending environmental approvals the mining company wants to have the Sorby Hills mine up and running within three years.

Chief executive of the shire, Peter Stubbs, says the new bridge would keep trucks carrying lead off the streets.
